Well it finally happened!!  After rolling my mushroom logs into the pooling water below my gutter for a bath and then back to their home under the pecan tree behind my house, they fruited!!

I made the logs this spring at the BB workshop with mushroom guru Greg Bonito. He said that fungi like to be left alone, and that the only thing you really need to do (other than find them a shady spot to hang out) is water them every couple weeks.  Sweetgum, the medium for many a mushroom spore, tend to dry out faster than oaks, so they need to go swimming every now and again.  Or, in the case of my logs, once.

I was so excited when I saw layers of gorgeous shiitake mushrooms!   A neighbor I don't know heard me yell as he was walking by and I pulled him over to check out the pound of mushrooms growing out of the logs.   I'll be posting the nerdy "fun-guy" photos of me with a big thumbs up on my Facebook and on our web photo album so look out. And come out this Saturday 12-2 to learn how 'plant' an edible mushroom patch on straw or wood chips.

Peace and a Dumb Joke,

Sarah

Dumb Joke:

A mushroom walks into a bar and the bartender says "we don't serve your kind in here." The mushroom looks at him and says "what's the problem... I'm a fun guy!"

Food For Thought

Prices, wages, interest: all these categories are symbolic constructs that are essential elements in the material operation of modern industrial technology.  No less than the ritual shell sacrifices or beer parties of the Inca emperor, they represent culture-specific, symbolic strategies for making claims on other people's resources.
