Winter Workshops & Classes
This winter is a great time for building soil, pruning fruit trees, planning spring bounties, and taking some time to learn new things as the pace of life slows down.
Community Orchard Planting with BB and Durham Tech
We will be planting an edible polyculture with over 25 fruit trees and berry bushes surrounded by low-maintenance perennials. This is a very hands on workshop! Bring gloves and clothes to get dirty, as well as shovels, digging forks, pick axes, pitchforks and wheelbarrows if you have them. The urban mini-farm where we'll be working has chickens and rabbits, so kids are encouraged to attend!
When: March 6th, 10am-4pm
Where: Downtown Wake Forest, 230 S Main St.
Cost: Free

Mushroom Log Inoculation Workshop
Mycologist Greg Bonito will lead a group work shop on growing your own edible shiitake and oyster mushrooms through stump and log cultivation. Our spawn comes from Northwest Mycological Consultants in Oregon. The late winter months are a great time to learn how to grow mushrooms before the sap (sugar) gets to the spring buds and leaves. This will be our 6th mushroom workshop, from which many participants have yielded good results.
When: February 20th, 1PM-3PM
Where: Bull City Headquarters, 723 North Mangum Street
What to Bring: Cordless drill & bits to supplement ours, small brushes, your questions about fungi!
Cost: $45, Scholarships Available. Participants are usually able to plug 3-4 logs.

Rain Garden Workshop
Durham Academy's GRO Club is hosting a Rain Garden installation for the Middle School's Edible Schoolyard.
Learn how to create habitat and solve drainage problems in your home and community. Rain gardens help filter toxins away from our water supply, create wildlife habitat for beneficial birds & insects, and help store water in your landscape, which prevents erosion of topsoil.
This hands-on workshop will cover how to size a rain garden, the different drainage components you'll need, and a brief discussion of necessary soil media. We will also be planting Blueberries and an Herb Spiral! Come to work, learn and hang out as we brave the cold and create an awesome garden with the students.
When: January 16th, from 9AM-4PM
Where: Durham Academy Middle School
We appreciate donations of time & talent. $$ donations to help fund other community projects always welcome!
